The Bridge is a 5-star hotel located in the oldest historic part of Wrocław on Ostrów Tumski – the island where Wrocław began. The hotel’s name is not coincidental – as Wrocław is known as the ‘Venice of the North’ and considered a city of bridges, The Bridge refers to one of them – the Bridge behind the Cathedral.
“Our task was to add another chapter in the history of Ostrow Tumski. We designed a building that clearly indicates the time in which it was built, we wanted to show that it was built here and now – so we were looking for a form that would not hide behind historical staffage. We also wanted the hotel to open up to the city and the residents, unlike other facilities of its kind. The restaurant, with its entrance directly from Cathedral Square, and the hotel’s public garden, which in future will enable a walk from the Cathedral to the riverfront, ensure this openness.” says Michał Goncerzewicz of Forum Architekci.
Forum Architekci architects have created a modern design that fits perfectly into the historic surroundings of the city. More than 170 thousand of CLASSIC clinker bricks, fired at our Patoka brickworks in a traditional coal-fired Hoffman kiln, as well as glass and aluminium, were used for its external façade. It was intended that the building’s simple form would not compete with the cathedral and neighbouring monuments, but would emphasise them more. At the same time, the uniqueness of the materials used on the façade was intended to expose this volume. Brick as a classic material that has been used for centuries, among others. in Gothic-style buildings proved to be the ideal material for this.
Both the building and its interior are very impressive. The Bridge won first places in the European Property Awards 2020-2021 in the categories best architecture and best interiors. And in 2021, it won the Luxury Architecture Design Hotel category of the 2021 World Luxury Hotel Awards. The voting public felt that this property offered the best architectural design of all nominated hotels from Eastern Europe.
